Victorian Universities

The state of Victoria is blessed with a wide variety of environments that extend from rugged coastlines, peaceful beaches, tree-covered mountains, and semi-arid plains. It has a fair, temperate climate that makes it suitable for year-round enjoyment of the many wonders that it offers. The state has a long history as a business, cultural and intellectual centre and the universities in Victoria have developed both supporting and being supported by these important components of society.

The Victorian universities sector is focused on the capital city Melbourne, but like business, industry and government there is also a major representation of universities in the regional cities. Some of the universities have multiple campuses so there is a choice about where the studies are done. Learning can take different forms including living and studying right in the centre of the capital city and enjoying the same high quality education within the relaxed atmosphere of a regional campus.

There is a wide range of choices when you decide to study at one of the Victorian universities. Take some time to explore the links and see what each of the universities in Victoria has to offer you.

List of Universities in Australia

This list of universities in Australia is arranged in alphabetical order. When you are looking for a university in the list make sure you look in the section beginning 'University of' along with the name of the university. For example, if you are looking for 'Ballarat University' at the 'B' section it will not be there. This is because the proper name of the university is the 'University of Ballarat' and it will therefore be found under 'U' for 'University of'.

There is a number of cases like this in the Australian university list such as the Universities of Sydney, Adelaide, and Melbourne.

Any prospective student should be aware that the ratings of Australian universities might produce a list of what is regarded as Australian top universities, but this does not mean that these universities have what the student requires over all areas of study. Many of the Australian universities have reputations in various areas that are far better than the reputations that the ranked or elite level universities have for those particular areas. Two examples would be RMIT University's architecture studies and La Trobe University's nursing studies. There are also many other examples in areas such as computing, international studies, public relations, and business. The prospective student must therefore think carefully about how any university offers exactly what the student wants instead of just relying on an Australian university ranking system alone.

There is no official ranking of Australian universities as exists in some other countries. All universities used to be grouped in terms of quality but that practice was stopped because the government believed it placed limitations on the lower ranking and benefited the top ranking Australian universities, The Department of Education, Science and Training DEST teaching performance rankings Australia are not really a ranking of the universities as they relate to the experience of the students. The Australian university rankings that do exist are therefore based on independent evaluations that use different critera and approach the task from different perspectives. One of the first to undertake a rating was Asiaweek, although the best Australian universities were included with the Asian rankings in the survey they conducted.
Asiaweek's Australian top ranking universities

Asiaweek magazine spent three years compiling the first and only regional listing of Asia's best universities, They claim that they have become an authority on the subject. Asiaweek maintains an extensive databank on everything from faculty qualifications to research output to student-per-teacher ratios to data on Internet access of 114 leading multi-disciplinary institutions and science and technology schools across Asia. Unfortunately for the credibility of Asiaweek's ranking system there have been some major Asian universities withdraw from the survery. Most notable of these is the withdrawal of the prestigious University of Tokyo. Along with this many of the Chinese universities have decided not to particpate.

All of the Australian universities took part in the survey so it is still possible to get an idea about what Asiaweek thought about the top Australian universities. The only problem with the withdrawal of so many top profile Asian insitutions from the survey is that the position on the list is not necessarily correct. However, the position of each institution relative to other Australian universities can still show what Asiaweek thought of the Australian rankings.
Asiaweek's ranking of Australian universities

The original Asiaweek 1999 survey included a number of Australian universities. These are presented in the order that they appear in the Asianweek top 100 (with original Asiaweek Asian ranking position indicated).

* 8 University of New South Wales
* 10 University of Melbourne
* 13 Australian National University
* 15 University of Sydney
* 19 University of Queensland
* 25 University of Western Australia
* 34 University of Adelaide
* 46 Monash University
* 51 Macquarie University
* 59 University of Wollongong

In 2000 Asiaweek grouped the universities into two distinct categories and then rated them relative to other universities in that category. The distinction between 'Multi-Disciplinary' and 'Science and Technology' does not seem so relevant in the modern higher education sector. Analysing the Australian rankings shows that the classification seems to have been based on historical factors as they are mainly the old institutes of technology. Although these do lead the way in a number of areas of science and technology, they also have a very strong presence in a number of non-science and technology areas such as business. The rankings are presented for your examination but they should be viewed with a critical mind.

Another way of looking at the Australian university ratings is to examine some of the groupings that have formed since the removal of the government controlled grouping system. The most important of these is the 'Group of Eight' which consists of all the previous 'Group 1' Universities (the highest ranking) along with a couple of others that have improved their performance and quality over recent years. The group of eight is regarded as the group of top Australian universities and each of these universities is able to attract resources, students and personnel because of this reputation. The group of eight consists of (not in ranking order):

* The University of Adelaide
* The Australian National University
* The University of Melbourne
* Monash University
* The University of New South Wales
* The University of Queensland
* The University of Sydney
* The University of Western Australia

Australia's Best Universities

e Good Oil

The first to attempt some sort of quantitatively based ranking of the entire world's universities was that of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University(SJTU), which only began the exercise in 2003. Several international conferences later, these ratings are now conducted under the rubric of the Academic Ranking of World Universities, which is all to the good.

“SJTU vs THES”

Irked that some parvenus in a supposed–Third World nation had deigned to pass judgement on the First World, the well-respected The Times Higher Education Supplement (THES) in the United Kingdom came up with its own Top 200 list of the world's best universities.

The Italians, feeling left out of this Anglo-Sino rivalry, riposted with their own studies at Webometrics. When we know more about them, we'll get back to you.

Ranking the world's universities is a big job, and a difficult one. It's impossible to say how far the concept is meaningful. Everyone would agree that some universities are better than others, but how do we measure the differences? Since no one else has put their hands up to do the task, the SJTU and THES rankings stand as the only benchmarks we can use. You can read a statistical comparison of the two here.

The rival rankings
The SJTU ranks Australian universities

When SJTU's rankings first appeared, the senior management at the University of Sydney sat up in their chairs. This university is one of Australia's oldest, established as an Antipodean Oxford 150 years ago. All well and fine when your function is to reproduce the colonial upper-class. Not today: Australian universities have to produce results, not blue-bloods, to rake in the dough.

The University launched a campaign to become first in the country (Australia); fifth in the region (Asia) and 40th in the world by 2010; on SJTU's ranking. They called it the 1:5:40 strategy. What happened? They couldn't get better than 102nd by 2007. So they shifted the goal-posts to the much more comfy THES system, and voila! goal achieved..
The THES ranks Australian universities

The THES ranks the Australian universities much higher than SJTU does. We are more than dubious. The 2007 THES ratings places one Australian university as better than every university in Europe and every university in Japan. We don't think so.
The results: Australia's best universities

We list here the rankings of the Australian universities from both SJTU and THES, for all the years available (which isn't that many).

We include every Australian university they listed in any of their annual ranking charts. If you can't find your university here, you might want to rethink your educational choice.

As you can see, the lists are quite disparate: many universities on one list are not on the other, let alone their relative position.
The SJTU rankings

SJTU ranks the top 500 of the world's universities.

We've read a detailed defence of SJTU's methodology in one of our favourite journals, Scientometrics1. You can find a further critique by Richard Holmes of the University of Malaysia in the Asian Journal of University Education. He also has some comments about Australian universities at a blog. Well worth reading.

SJTU does not supply a specific rank after number 100, only a grouping. Admittedly, the groupings are inconsistent from year to year, but what the hey.

The THES rankings

THES ranks the top 200 of the world's universities, down to the very rank. We are a bit dubious of that precision: but what do we know? The table below lists every Australian university that has appeared in their rankings.

We haven't seen anyone defend the THES rankings in any scholarly journal: for that you have to go to this lunatic's email.
